When we run a free digital audit for a local business, we evaluate six core areas: SEO fundamentals, social media presence, online reviews, website speed, mobile experience, and content quality. Each area is scored out of roughly 17 points for a total of 100.
The Six Areas We Evaluate
1. SEO Fundamentals
Title tags, meta descriptions, heading structure, keyword usage, and Google Business Profile optimization. Most businesses miss basics like consistent NAP (Name, Address, Phone) across directories.
2. Social Media Presence
Active profiles, posting frequency, engagement rates, and platform-appropriate content. A dormant Instagram with 3 posts from 2022 hurts more than having no profile at all.
3. Online Reviews
Google review count, average rating, response rate, and recency. Businesses with fewer than 20 Google reviews are nearly invisible in local pack results.
4. Website Speed
Core Web Vitals, time to first byte, largest contentful paint, and cumulative layout shift. Many local business sites load in 6+ seconds on mobile — users leave after 3.
5. Mobile Experience
Responsive design, tap target sizes, font readability, and mobile navigation. Over 60% of local searches happen on phones, yet many sites are still desktop-first.
6. Content Quality
Service page depth, blog activity, image optimization, and calls to action. Thin pages with a paragraph and a phone number don't rank or convert.
Why Scores Are So Low
The average local business we audit scores between 25 and 40 out of 100. This isn't because owners don't care — it's because digital marketing has gotten significantly more competitive while most small businesses are focused on operations.
The businesses that dominate local search have invested in all six areas consistently. They respond to reviews within 24 hours, publish content weekly, and maintain sub-3-second load times. The gap between “has a website” and “visible online” is wider than ever.
What a Score Under 40 Means
A score below 40 means your business is likely invisible in organic search results for your core services. You're probably losing 3-5 potential customers per week to competitors who rank higher. The good news: most improvements are straightforward and don't require a complete redesign.
Quick wins like fixing title tags, responding to reviews, and improving page speed can move you from 35 to 55 in a matter of weeks. From there, consistent content and social activity build toward the 70+ range where real growth happens.
